Dear Atria, today I want to talk about the importance of water. I've heard people saying 'Water is life' and this is actually very true. Without water we wouldn't be able to survive. A human body consists of 60% water. The brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and the bones are 31%. No wonder that staying hydrated is extremely important and can have a huge impact on overall health. Water is needed by all the cells and organs in the body in order for them to function properly. It is also used to lubricate the joints, protect the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, regulate body temperature and assist the passage of food through the intestines. The ability of water to dissolve so many substances allows our cells to use valuable nutrients, minerals, and chemicals in biological processes. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), an adequate intake of water for men is approximately 3 liters a day and for around 2.2 liters. A person can survive without food even few weeks, but without water only days. Water is thought to prevent colon cancer, you perform better when you drink enough water, you are less grumpy, drinking water reduces joint pain, helps you to maintain a healthy weight, flushes waste and toxins, prevents headaches and makes your skin glow. So, dear Atria, raise your glass with water, drink up and stay healthy. Cheers :-) |
