It has been raining a lot for the past few weeks and as you surely know some parts of the country have been even flooded. It affected lives of many people and it has ruined many households. Too much rain it’s certainly not a good thing.
I hope you are safe and sound and I checked flood warnings for the area where you live, so I know there are no warnings at present. It’s also safe where I am although it has been raining most of the time for a while now. A gloomy weather doesn’t encourage many outdoor activities, but you still have to go to school regardless of the weather, so why not to think of rain as just one of these things that is there, something we cannot do anything about and just accept it, or even try to enjoy it? Do you know actually how is rain made? I found a nice picture (below) explaining the whole water cycle in the nature. The water cycle is the cycle that water goes through on Earth. Have a look, it’s quite interesting.
Excess water from plants is also absorbed into the atmosphere, this process is called transpiration.
Then, water collects as water vapor in the sky. This makes clouds.
Next, the water in the clouds gets cold. This makes it become liquid again.
Then, the water falls from the sky as rain, snow, sleet, or hail which is called precipitation.
The water then collects into lakes, oceans, or aquifers. From there, it evaporates again and continues the cycle.
In simple words I would summarise the whole cycle in the following five main points:
1. Water evaporates or is transpired by plants and trees.
2. Water condenses into the atmosphere
3. Water falls from the sky (rain, snow, ice)
4. Water goes into the ground as groundwater, into streams, rivers, etc.
5. Water evaporates again and the cycle repeats.
And as you know water is essential for life so rain can’t be all that bad. I actually quite like walking in the rain in the spring or summer, when it is warm and the rain just gently cools you down. Don’t try it when it isn’t warm as then it is easy to catch a cold.
I think there are quite few good things about rain. It waters plants and trees and most importantly farmers’ crops so it is in a way life-giving. It keeps lawns looking nice and green. In many countries lawns have to be watered but in UK they are nice all year around due to amount of rain we have. It also washes cars and people don’t have to go to the car wash that often when it’s raining. It certainly helps me to keep my bike clean :-) When it is raining you can wear your brightly-coloured wellies and go through all the puddles. You can also showcase your umbrella and rain coat. And when it’s raining on a sunny day you can see a beautiful rainbow. If you don’t feel like going out on a rainy weekend you have a perfect excuse to stay indoors, watch movies and potter about. I quite like to watch the rain trickling down the window or listen to the gentle pitter patter of raindrops when I sit in a warmth of my home. it has a nice and calming effect. Rainy days are also great for going to the cinema or to a museum. And when it rains a lot you really start to appreciate the sunshine when it finally arrives, and it inspires you to get out and about and make the most of it.
Can you think of any other good things about rain dear Atria?
